(a recap of Pastor Tan Kay Kiong’s sermon: 5th June 2016)
Dear fellow FCCians, members of the household of faith, I was blessed by the message by Pastor Tan Kay Kiong on the weekend when he was with us. The passage from John 17:4-12, was very well expounded from the perspective of discipleship modelled by Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thus, I would like to put it on paper to remind us the MANDATE we are commissioned to, “Go, preach and make disciples of all nation....” with the MODEL he set for us. The 5 priorities of discipleship should govern our daily lives as His true disciples.
1. Revealing the Father. (verse 6)
The foremost of those priorities is the task of revealing who our heavenly father is.
In the past we continually made known to the world that God first loved them and we still do that today.
We tell people that God loves them. The gospel is about the love of God to the world (John 3:16). But the task means more than just telling others. It is about showing and revealing to others the love of the Father.
In other words, our life priority is not just telling but also living exemplary lives so that they will invariably come to know and experience the Father’s love. Even Jesus preached that we should be doing good so that when others see our “good” works, they will glorify God the Father. It is not just any good works, but the reflective love of God that Jesus was talking about. It is an awesome but a privileged task, now that we have tasted the love of God ourselves.
2. Bringing them Living Truth (verses 8, 14)
One of the pillars of FCC is the WORD. Our foundation must be grounded in the Word of God and our lives must be rooted in His word so much so, that it governs our attitudes, our behavior and our person.
Only the Word of God can sanctify our lives. God has given us the Word. Let us learn, let us apply, let us memorize and let us be found diligent in His word, careful to do all according to them. Then we will pass it down to others in more relevant ways possible that they in turn will be transformed by His word.
3. Prayer for them
Another core value to consider = prayer. Just as Jesus took time to pray for them, our Care Groups were established for such bonding as well. It is in the CG that we learn of each other, open up to each other, learn from each other, support one another and to pray for one another. Let us rise in our prayer life as individuals and as a church. Let us come together often as we can to pray together.
4. Protecting them by love
Protecting comes from caring and loving the people God has caused to cross our path. As we grow to become disciples and disciple makers, we want to care for them.
The people God caused to come our path is for us to love them to see them changed and may we be counted worthy instruments in the hands of God to achieve that. We must constantly remember that God will take the “simple to shame the wise”, therefore God can change and we always look forward to that.
5. Sending them out to the world
Lastly is the task of continued evangelism. Evangelism does not stop with us. We are to pass on to faithful men, who in turn will pass on to other faithful men and so forth. It is preparing them to go
Jaeger-LeCoultre Replica out into the world just as Jesus did for his disciples who in turn, turned the world upside down.
CONCLUSION
We have a Biblical Mandate = to preach the gospel and make disciples. We also have the Best Model = to follow the pattern of our Lord Jesus in a very concrete way to disciple others. Let us join hands together in FCC to fulfill that. Let each of us be a dedicated disciple and then a disciple maker! God bless.
