Introduction Breitling Navitimer Replica
We had just celebrated Easter. When I began to write this article, my meditation had been around the passion week of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We have been focusing on what the Lord has done for us. However, in return there should also be the response of what we are doing for the Lord. Let me share my thoughts on one person who had done a marvelous thing so much so her impact lasted till today.
She is Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. It is centered around the incident when she came to the house of Simon the leper and anointed Jesus with a very expensive perfume.
An opportunity seized
It is interesting to observe what this woman did. We all know that she gave her treasured gift and savings to the Lord. It was a very expensive perfume saved for one’s burial. In fact, the gospel of John tells us that the perfume could be sold for 300 denarii which is a year’s income of an average worker. If we were to make an equivalent today, looking at RM1500 per month, the perfume would have cost RM18000. That is indeed a lot of money for many people. That was her act of worship to the Lord.
What caught my attention were two words in the gospels. John recorded for us that it was 6 days before Passover and this act is an act of burial. It was as though she possessed the fore knowledge of her Lord’s death as well as the plot of the Jews to kill Jesus. She was afraid that she might not have the opportunity to anoint her Lord, thus this act.
At the most unexpected situation, she did that. It was a party given by Simon in the presence of Mary, Martha, Lazarus and all the disciples of Jesus. It was a party and she broke the party with a burial ritual. Can you imagine during one of these joyful parties you throw, someone brings a coffin as a gift!! Yet it was complimented by the Lord.
In the Mandarin Bible comes a very interesting word in the act of Mary. It is the word “chen” [趁] which means “seizing the opportunity” [趁机会]. When Jesus was seated, she seized the opportunity to worship her Lord.
Our lives are about the opportunities God has given us. It may be someone we meet, someone we can minister, something to act upon and being a sensitive person as Mary was – she seized the opportunity to worship her Lord in her giving. Everything and everyone around us is an opportunity to serve the Lord.
For whom are we doing it?
When the jar was broken, the disciples were angry and said, “Why this waste?” to which Jesus responded, “Don’t trouble this woman for the poor you will always have but you will not always have me. What she did was a beautiful thing for me.”
The question for us is this: In all that we do, why are we doing it? Is it for Jesus? In the Bahasa translation, it comes out even more interesting when the disciples said, “Untuk apa ini diboroskan?”
My thought is this: the disciples asked the wrong question. It is never about “for what?”, it is always about “for whom?” (untuk siapa” and Jesus complimented Mary who had done to Jesus a beautiful thing which would invariably be remembered in the generations to come.
Conclusion
In your service, in your giving, in your friendship, in your relationships – remember that it is always “For whom?”. So let us seize every opportunity to pray, to work, to serve, to give, to encourage and
