Scripture: John 17:1-26
Introduction
- What would you do if face with someone challenged the Bible?
A. THREE things Jesus prayed for
1. Keep from evil ones
- John 17:15
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.”
- KEEP; be it Temptation or Threat
- Thus, being kept from the evil one involves not just being shielded from external harm but also being empowered to resist temptation and to find restoration and growth through repentance and God’s grace.
2. Sanctify in the Truth; the Words
- John 17:17
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
- John 17:19
“And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.”
- The Power of God’s word, it’s the sword of the Holy Spirit
3. Keep to be with Jesus
- John 17:24
“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.”
- Regardless what we’ve gone through ;
- It’s not that we should continue to sin, there will be consequences if we sinned, but what is important, we must fully understand the desire of Jesus, that is to keep those who belongs to Him!
- Repent my bro and sis, if you know you have committed sins against God, yet have the assurance that God is a faithful God, He will forgive you and keep you to Himself so that you will see the Glory and Love of God!
B. TWO groups of people He prayed for
1. Those Already in the Fold (His Disciples)
- John 17:9
"I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours."
- Jesus' Immediate Concern: Jesus' primary concern here is keep them from the evil ones, sanctification and keep them to Himself of His current disciples.
- The Role of the Disciples: Jesus did not pray for us, who are in the Fold to be kept as a weak babies!
- We, the disciples of God, are chosen by God to be a strong army. We are to be sent to the world! To impact and influence the world. And as for those who are still outside the fold, we are to bring them to Christ!
2. Those Who Will Believe (Future Believers)
- John 17:20
"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.“
- The Ongoing Mission:
- Unity and Witness:
- The Reality of Rejection:
- Impacting the World:
C. ONE true God
- John 17:3
"And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
1. The ONE
- Jesus is the Exclusive Path to Eternal Life:
- The Sent One from God:
- Jesus as the Revelation of God:
2. As ONE
- John 17:11
"And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one."
- Unity Reflecting the Divine Relationship:
- Strength and Support:
- Dependence on God:
Conclusion
- John 17 is a powerful reminder of Jesus' love and His vision for His church.
- May we be united as one, just as He and the Father are one. And may our unity be a powerful testimony to the world of the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
