INTRODUCTION
- With that Jesus explains about the person and the work of the Holy Spirit. Here we have an almost perfect summary of the work of the Holy Spirit.
- What then is his work? In verse 8, it is described that work of the Holy Spirit of consecration involves conviction.
A. CONVICTION OF SIN
“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement.”
- The initial work of consecration is the question of conviction and Jesus explained here that the work of conviction is the work of God.
- The Holy Spirit firstly convicts the sinner / prebeliever of his sin and bring about conversion
- The Holy Spirit also convicts us of sins that we may live righteous lives.
B. CONVICTION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
- The other work of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world of the righteousness of Christ.
“.... because I go to the Father.”
- The importance of righteousness is seen in the righteousness of Christ himself.
- Christ going to the Father proves that He is indeed the righteousness One.
- When saved, we too are to live righteous lives. (Eph 2:8-10)
C. CONVICTION OF JUDGEMENT
“....... because ruler of this world has been judged.”
- On the cross, evil and Satan stood condemned and defeated.
CONCLUSION
- What then are the implications of knowing the work of the Holy Spirit?
- In our evangelistic effort – pray as only the Holy Spirit can bring about conviction and conversion. We are asked to share!
- Let us pray specifically that the Holy Spirit will bring about conviction to our hearts as we consecrate ourselves to the Lord and for the Lord. Only God can bring about the righteousness that he has called us to.
