INTRODUCTION
- Temptation is something that is around us all the time. No matter where we turn to, we can not run away from it.
【Genesis 39:7-18】
- Joseph, a model of a consecrated life where we learn to face temptation.
A. THE NEED TO RECOGNISE THE TEMPTATION [vv7, 10-12]
- There is a cycle of temptation and resistance repeated.
7-10: temptation and Joseph's refusal.
11-12; temptation and refusal again.
1. THE PROPOSITION of the Temptation [v7] - The Invitation
- "Come lie with me!"
2. Then the PERSISTENCE of the temptation [v10]
- It persisted with frequency.
3. The PRIVACY of the temptation [vv11-12]
- It was planned, it was a private matter. No one needed to know.
Summary:
- The first step to facing temptation is to RECOGNIZE it as such.
A. THE NEED TO RESIST TEMPTATION [vv8-12]
1. The Right Perception [vv8-9]
a. He sees it firstly as a Violation of Trust (8-9)
b. It is a Violation of Righteousness (9b)
c. It is a Violation of God (9b)
2. The Right Action [vv8-12]
a. A Refusal
Verse 8: But he refused.
Verse 10: He refused to listen.
b. A Retreat
Verse 12: He left his cloak in her hand and run out of the house.
C. THE NEED TO RETAIN OUR TRUST IN GOD [vv13-18]
- The story has not ended.
1. Joseph was false accused.
- Instead of her seducing Joseph, she accused Joseph of seducing her.
2. Joseph remains faithful and retains his trust in God despite the imprisonment as the account later recorded.
3. What is demanded thus is a life of righteousness and obedience to the will of God.
CONCLUSION
- How do we regard sexuality today?
- How do we view temptations today?
- In overcoming a temptation, does not mean we will be liked by people.
- So we are left to choose when we are faced with temptation - To Remain or to Run
