Introduction
- In the Christian life we are either overcomers or we will be overcome, either victors or we will be victimized. Much of life is like a battle.
- In this model, it is about learning to win battles by a life that is consecrated to one who can lead us to victory.
A. FOLLOWING THE RIGHT CAPTAIN
- Invictus by William Ernest Henley:
“I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
1. He is the Captain who leads
- Joshua 3:3-4
“When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before...”
- For Joshua – it is not over, in Joshua 13:1, he said "There remains yet very much land to be possessed"
2. He is the Captain who defeats
- He is the living God
- He is the Lord of all the earth
- He defeats enemies
- He defeats / overcome obstacles
3. He is the Captain who stays
- Verse 17
The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
B. FOLLOWING WITH RIGHT COMMITMENT
- By consecration ourselves (verse 5)
- By listening to God (verse 9)
- By acting in faith (verse 15)
Conclusion
- Would we let Jesus be our captain?
- Would we consecrate ourselves to him?
Jude in his epistle said; “To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy, the only God our Savior, be glory, majesty, pwoer and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord, now and forevermore.”
