Scripture: Hebrews 11:32-40
Introduction
Hebrews 11:1 - definition of faith:
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”
- The rest of the chapter is to show to us the meaning of that definition:
1. To see the certainty of the hope so sure as though it is in the present
2. To visualize with certainty, the conviction is their daily lives
- How then do we see the power of such a life of consecration?
A. EXTRAORDINARY GOD, ORDINARY MEN (v32)
“And what more shall I say? I do not have the time tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets”
1. The Judges: Gideon,Barak, Jephthah, Samson
2. The King: David
3. The Prophets: Samuel
- These are but names after names but they tell us one truth:
ORDINARY MEN, EXTRAORDINARY GOD
B. EXTREME VICTORY, EXTREME GRACE (vv33-38)
- Achievements (v33)
1. Conquered kingdoms = great victory
2. Commanded justice = great governance
- Deliverance (vv33-34)
1. Deliverance from predators = shut the mouth of lions
2. Deliverance from powers of nature = quench the fury of flames
3. Deliverance from persecutors = escape the edge of sword
- Endurance (v34)
1. Become strong = weakness becoming strong
2. Become victorious = powerful in battle
- Perseverance (vv35-38)
1. Through death or life = v35
2. Through persecution or martyrdom = vv36-37
3. Through abandonment and hiding = v38
Joni Eareckson Tada said, “God allows what He hated to accomplish what He loves!”
C. ETERNAL REWARD (vv39-40)
1. Faith commended = commended for their faith
2. Patience developed = though not received the promise now
3. Perfection prepared = prepared something better that we be made perfect through all this
