Introduction
- SIMON BIRCH: A PURPOSE IN LIFE
- How many of you remember a movie by the name of Simon Birch that came out in 1998?
- Does God have a plan for all of us today? Despite all that we are. I would like to think that He does.
- As we look at today’s passage – even the Son of God who came to this world – has a plan.
- John 12:27
“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose, I have come to this hour.
A. The Sorrow He endured
- Jesus said, “Now my soul is troubled and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? It was for this very reason that I came to this hour.”
- Look at the close comparison of this account with that of the garden of Gethsemane:
Now my soul is troubled and what shall I say?
|
My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.
|
What shall I say? Father, save me from this hour?
|
“Father, if it is possible, let his cup passed from me.”
|
It was for this very reason I came to this hour
|
Nevertheless, let your will be done
|
“Father, glorify your name!” and then a voice came from heaven
|
An angel of the Lord appeared to him and strengthen him
|
- But why would he do it?
B. The Purpose he embraced
1. A voice heard
“Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it and will glorify it again!” – the crowd that was there and heard it said, “it had thundered, others said an angel had spoken to him.”
2. A victory proclaimed
“31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.
32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.”
- The drawing of all man when he is lifted up.
3. A vice to be avoided
- Unbelief
- Missing the opportunity
- Still living in darkness
Conclusion
- What is God saying to you today?
- Come to him – do not let unbelief or delays or refusal change to hinder you from coming to him.
- Embrace you purpose – our purpose is clear – we are salt and light. We are ambassadors, we are to love and to serve. Never let the sorrows of this world stop you from doing what God wants to do for you and with you.
