Speaker: Rev.Daniel
Romans 5:1-11
Introduction
The Big Picture: Romans 5-8
In Romans 5:1-21, we look at the status of those who are saved –
Two things mentioned:
There is Reconciliation with God. (1-11)
There is Reversal of Adam’s sin. (12-21)
RECONCILED TO GOD (1-11)
The reconciliation was brought about by the one act of Christ on the cross.
Key verse: 11
“We rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation”
A. THE RECONCILIATION BROUGHT ABOUT BY CHRIST’S DEATH (5-11)
1. God’s love expressed
Romans 5:5
“God’s love has been poured out into our hears through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
That is what the verse says – it all began with God’s love.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
I John 3:16
“By this we know love, that Jesus laid down his life for us”
I John 4:9
“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.”
John Piper asks about the evaluation of love:
i. The Costliness of the Deed
ii. How Undeserving the Object of Love Is
iii. The Greatness of the Benefit Secured
iv. The Freedom of the Act
2. God’s love manifested / demonstrated
i. Undeserving:
“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
ii. Benefits :
“We have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”
iii. The cost :
“Christ died for us.” It cost him his own life.
iv. The freedom to act:
John 10:14-15, 17-18
“I am the Good shepherd….I lay down my life for the sheep.”
Do you still have doubts of God’s love for you? How else do you want to evaluate if God really loves you?
B. THE RESULTS THE RECONCILIATION ACHIEVED. (1-5)
1. Peace with God (Promise of Peace)
“therefore having been justified by faith – we now have peace with God.”
Justification and peace with God are two totally difference issues.
2. Grace in life. (Gift of Grace)
“the grace by which we have access to through faith.”
GRACE is always a gift. We don’t earn it, we don’t work for it, we receive it!
3. Hope in spite of suffering. (Hand of Hope)
“We rejoice in hope of the glory of God!”
Romans 3:23 about falling short of the glory of God!
Romans 5:2 we hope of the glory of God
“not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character and character produces hope and hope does not put us to shame!”
Perseverance = as subjecting to God's working
Character = as knowing God's character
Hope = as attaining God's purpose.
Conclusion
This is what the death and resurrection of our Lord does to us and for us.
He loved us without any restriction – to the highest form that we understand
Can we love Him too, with all our hearts, our minds, our soul and our strength?
He is bringing to us today all the benefits of life
How can I shine the life of Christ in me despite all the gloominess of life?
