Hebrews 11 : 31
Introduction
What is so special about the faith of Rahab?
Hebrews 11:31
“By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies”
A. Rahab, residing in Jericho (A story about spies)
1. Two spies were sent
In Joshua 2:1. “And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.”
Question again: Why 2? Why not 12?
2. The Two went in to blend with the people
In verse 1, it says that “and they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.”
3. Their covers were blown
There were at least 2 persons who knew them.
- Rahab
- One other man who went to the king with the news
4. Can they get out of their situation?
If we don’t see anything special – we see the pure grace of God. God must have His hands on it.
Ephesians 2
Verse 1 -
“You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, ….
Verse 4-5 -
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved…..
Verse 8-9 -
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
5. All well ends well
What did Rahab do?
Rahab lied. Three lies.
Verse 4 - she claims she doesn't know where they come from.
Verse 5 - she makes it sound like they snuck out the city gate.
Verse 5 - she claims she doesn't know which way they went.
The point of Rahab’s faith is this. “By faith, Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.”
She did the more courageous thing – not the cowardice one.
B. Rahab, responding to a revelation
Definition of faith in Heb 11:1
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen
1. Faith comes from hearing
Rahab heard and she believed
2. Faith in seeking God for deliverance
Rahab believed that only God can help
Conclusion
- Do you believe in God? Does it matter what background you come from? God loves you and wants to deliver you as well – to forgive you of all your sins and make you His very own child.
- How do you respond to the revelations of God today? Is there obedience or will we “perish with those who were disobedient….”? Let us be found faithful to God always.
