Hebrews 11: 20-22
Out of 50 chapters in the book of genesis – 2nd half on these 3 people
- Isaac (25-27); Jacob (28-35); Joseph (36-50) – yet 1 verse on each here
From a number of memorable ones – an insignificant event selected
What Isaac did when old – what Jacob & Joseph did when about to die
2 things:
1. What’s insignificant to man is very significant to our god
- small acts like that of Moses’ parents appreciated by god
2. Don’t have to say much when describing faith of someone
- if god were to say one thing of us – what would he say?
- Spurgeon: scripture frequently sums up a man’s life in a single sentence
Note:
1. How their faith is connected to the faith of forefathers
- Isaac; Jacob & joseph connected to father Abraham
- same for us: parents etc. – most of all to our Lord Jesus
2. How their faith is expressed in blessing future generations
- Isaac to his sons – older generations blessing younger
- Jacob to his grandsons – through worship & gratitude
- joseph to future Israel – prophesied their exodus
3 lessons:
1. Greatest thing we can do is pass faith to our children
2. Saddest thing is ending up a bitter person when old
3. Happiest way to live is to realize God is bigger than us
All 3 can say the same thing:
- promises of God are forever true
- even if unfulfilled during our life-time
Isaac, Jacob & Joseph never gave up believing god & all 3 died in faith
How we should live our lives – ready to go & leave something behind
