Romans 3:9-20
Introduction:
Here in this section Paul, being a lawyer, bring his concluding statement before the jury. The point is that we now become the accused as well as the jury.
A. THE CHARGE OF MAN (v 9)
“What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin,”
We are all under sin!
B. THE CASE OF MAN (10-18)
Look at how Paul describe the case of man here: The Depravity of Humanity
What does total depravity actually implies?
What it does not mean?
1. That every man is as thoroughly depraved as he can become.
2. That sinful man is incapable of good acts toward man.
3. That every unregenerate man will indulge in every form of sin.
What it does mean?
1. That corruption extends to the whole of humanity. Every part of man is touched by sin.
2. That man in unable to help himself.
3. That there is no spiritual good in relation to God in the sinner at all.
PAUL is addressing humanity on a whole and then he gave more explicit explanation of how it looks like:
- The mind darkened = no one understands
- The heart godless = they seek not God
- The will rebellious = they turn aside
- The mouth foul = it is like an open grave
- The lips deceptive = deceiving, full of poison
- The feet destructive = swift to shed blood
- The eyes fearless = no fear of God
C. THE CONDEMNATION OF MAN
1. Every Person Accountable (3:19a)
2. Every Mouth Closed (3:19b)
3. Every Life Condemned (3:20)
D. THE CURE FOR MAN
“Jehovah Jireh” What does it mean? What provision are we talking about here?
The Jehovah Jireh provided us a sacrifice and that is Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION
1. What good can I bring before God?
2. What good has God brought before us?
